List of medicinesList of approved medicinal productsVancouver, BC, United States — A new survey of Canadian health care professionals revealed that more than 40 percent of respondents had used erectile dysfunction medication, and more than 40 percent had used Viagra.
Researchers surveyed more than 1,000 health care professionals to see whether they had used Viagra or other erectile dysfunction medications. In the survey, Viagra and other erectile dysfunction medications were the most commonly prescribed medications, with the most commonly used drugs being Cialis, Adderall, and Levitra. Researchers found that while Viagra was associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and stroke, Cialis was also associated with a reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The findings come from a new Canadian study published in the June 13 issue of the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association. Researchers examined 1,092,837 health care professionals who had been practicing in Canada since 1999.
“This survey shows that in Canada, the majority of patients who use erectile dysfunction medications have used Viagra or other prescription erectile dysfunction medications,” said study author Dr. James L. Korsakas, M. D., professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and a member of the Canadian Association for the Study of Medicine’s steering committee.
“However, this is the largest and most recent survey of Canadian health care professionals to examine the use of erectile dysfunction medications and their impact on overall health.”
Researchers interviewed 1,092,837 health care professionals who had been practicing in Canada since 1999. Researchers also interviewed health care professionals who had received a diagnosis of diabetes, high blood pressure, or prostate cancer.
Researchers found that those who had used erectile dysfunction medications had a decreased risk of strokes, heart attacks, and certain types of cardiovascular disease.
In addition, those who had used Viagra had a reduced risk of heart attacks, stroke, and all types of cardiovascular disease.
Researchers also found that those who had used Cialis had a decreased risk of stroke and heart attacks.
The findings suggest that using Cialis in addition to Viagra and other erectile dysfunction medications may lead to a reduction in the overall risk of heart attacks and strokes for some users.
“These findings highlight the importance of seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Robert E. Kortmann, M. D., president of the Canadian Institute of Health Policy. “We also look forward to the new findings and the opportunity to address the underlying reasons behind erectile dysfunction medications, such as the increasing availability of prescription erectile dysfunction medications, and the increased availability of alternative treatments for erectile dysfunction.”
Researchers noted that the Canadian study was not a random exercise and the results of the study were based on the use of Viagra in conjunction with other erectile dysfunction medications.
Researchers also found that those who had used Cialis had a reduced risk of strokes, heart attacks, or all types of cardiovascular disease.
“The findings are very important in the context of the increasing use of erectile dysfunction medications in Canada,” said Dr. E. J. Hsu, president of the Canadian Association for the Study of Medicine.
“The increasing use of prescription erectile dysfunction medications in Canada has the potential to reduce cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality, and these medications have been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.”
Researchers also found that those who had used Cialis had a reduced risk of stroke, heart attacks, or all types of cardiovascular disease.

In addition to the Canadian study, the Health Canada Drug Benefit (HCDDB) is a public health program that covers erectile dysfunction medication.
